SOCIALS

We firmly believe that sport should have a social dimension, and in addition to socialising after matches we also run a number of social events throughout the year. We are part of Kings Heath Cricket and Sports Club which also runs other sports sections including cricket, tennis, squash, snooker, and bowls. The main club has won the following awards: Community Club of the Year, King of Clubs, Sports Club of the Year.

ABOUT US

Kings Heath Pickwick Hockey Club is a South Birmingham based hockey club providing league and social hockey to Men, Women and Young People from the local community.

The Men’s section is made up of two local clubs, Kings Heath Hockey Club and Pickwick Hockey Club, that amalgamated in 1994 with Pickwick Hockey Club leaving its ground to move to Kings Heath Cricket and Sports Club. It has a long history and is one of the oldest hockey clubs in the Midlands running up to eight teams every week in its heyday. Playing hockey within the Worcestershire region meant at times the majority of the County and Midlands sides consisted of either Kings Heath H.C. or Pickwick H.C. players.

The amalgamation also saw two of the biggest youth training schemes in the Midlands join forces. This created a consistently strong youth section which has provided the majority of the club’s players over the past twenty-five years. Both clubs had always had close ties with local schools and this tradition still continues today.

The Womens’ section has been in existance for over 30 years and has enjoyed considerable success on the pitch, and has continued in the Kings Heath Pickwick tradition of encouraging and developing young players as they progress through the Youth Section into the Senior Club.

Training takes place throughout the year, apart from breaks during the summer holidays and over the Christmas break. Training will not be cancelled for rain, and will take place in most weathers, the one exception is snow or a frozen pitch. If training is cancelled. Whilst we will try to inform all parents when a session is cancelled, and also post it on this website, with a large number of children it is not always possible to contact everyone. If you are in doubt about whether a training session or match will take place then please contact the Youth Development Officer, or coaches.

Shin pads and a mouth guard are mandatory. Players under 18 are not allowed to take part without this protection. We have a limited amount of sticks, so before investing your child can see how they get on and we can give you some advice on what might be the ideal stick to buy if they continue playing.

The hockey season runs from September to April, but Junior training continues to run up until the school summer holidays. Your child can join at any time during the year.

The hockey season runs from September to April, but Junior training continues to run up until the school summer holidays. Your child can join at any time during the year.

We run a Badgers side, which includes both boys and girls and restricts the number of adults allowed to play. This side plays in the local Badgers Conference league every Saturday through the season, and allows youngsters to gain an introduction to playing Saturday hockey in a more child-friendly environment. There are no hard and fast rules as to when a child is ready to move up to senior hockey, and the coaches will make a judgement on when they believe they are ready, at which point they will be invited to attend senior training.

Junior training takes place every Sunday morning, 10:00 to 12:00 at Woodrush Sports Centre. There is plenty of parking available on-site at Woodrush, and a cafe in the main building serving food and drink.

If your child is interested in joining us, you are welcome to bring them along to one of our Junior training sessions on a Sunday morning – just introduce yourself to one of the coaches and your Child will be able to join in the session, or just watch and see if they think it is something they want to try. Alternatively, you can fill in the enquiry form on this website, and someone will contact you.

You can find details of membership and match fees in the ‘Membership Information’ section of this website. We adjust membership for players joining late in the season, please contact us for further information.

Sessions are lead by England Hockey qualified coaches and volunteers from the club who play senior hockey. Our coaches have appropriate DBS clearance and safeguarding training. They are supported by parent volunteers. If you would like to find out more about getting involved in coaching, please contact us.

We nominate players for local Junior Development Centres (JDCs). These are the first stage in the Player Pathway, which then leads through to selection for regional (Midlands) level, and ultimately the National Age Group Squads (England U16, U18, etc). You can find out more about the Player Pathway on the England Hockey website.

Hockey Season starts in September and finishes in April. However we do have a mixed summers team that competes in local tournaments and we also undertake preseason training.
